Rainbow Earth Pigment Sets
Colorful, hand-ground pigments thoughtfully collected in Oregon for all paintmaking possibilities: watercolor, oil, tempra, face paint, pigmenting wax or crayons, and more!!
Recipes are not included with your order, but there are many sites online dedicated to natural binders. If you are making a fine paint medium, these pigments must be mulled in order to achieve expected smoothness, otherwise they will appear gritty. Please use a mask when handling dry powders.
The Watercolor Guidebook is 4"x3" and includes a watercolor recipe and instructions for mixing, along with a few extra tips for getting started. This is a helpful aid when working with earth pigments which exhibit more character then synthesized pigments because of their mineral makeup.
OPTIONS: the sample size is six colors weighing just under 2oz total, the paintmaker’s pack is 1oz of each color besides blue (3/4oz because of volume), weighing in at 5.75oz. If you would like to make a custom order of weight and colors from the pigments available in this pack please send a message here.

>>> The Pigments <<<
Iron ochre has an ancient history that people throughout time and the world have used to express themselves and their connection to the mineral body of the earth. Five of these colors are made by the geologic synergy of iron and oxygen, an elemental bond we share in our blood. Iron or ochre expresses different colors and qualities based on exposure to oxygen, pressure, heat, and substrate. Reds, pinks, oranges, yellows, purples, browns, and some greens are created through iron’s touch.
In the pack:
1) rich RED iron oxide from eastern Oregon (Umatilla territory)
2) ORANGE ochre foraged in the Cascade foothills (Kalapuya territory)
3) YELLOW limonite from a rolling plain in the Eastern Oregon desert (Umatilla territory)
4) GREEN celadonite from the Cascade Mountains (Santiam territory)
5) maya BLUE indigo clay infusion grown in Eugene with clay gathered in Eastern Oregon (Kalapuya territory)
6) PURPLE/BROWN hematite from the Cascade foothills (Kalapuya territory)
7) WHITE kaolinite also from the Cascade foothills (Kalapuya territory)

*Ethical. Many bulk earth pigment suppliers extract earth from mines which meet commercial demands affordably, but nonetheless have a high cost for the land. Supporting small scale paint makers helps divest from oil and harmful extractions that so often are overlooked at the art store. Thank you!
**Sacred Ground. All land is sacred, even parking lots and road sides. This land, so called America was taken from native nations, treaties were not honored, and has since not been well stewarded. Given this and knowing what we know now, may we do what we can for this Earth, learn about and ally against systemic racism towards native communities, and give power to their leadership. A few teachers and inspirations of mine include: Lyla June, Robin Wall Kimmerer, Rowan White, Kim Tallbear, and Pat McCabe. Check them out!
*** In gratitude for the wisdom and service of the First Nations whose homelands these pigments come from, 5% percentage of all paint and pigment sales goes toward supporting their leadership and land stewardship.
